Brinkmanship and acrimony have tended to be the default positions for commercial negotiations between racing and the betting industry, often in combination.

The annual levy negotiations were a regular example of this, as were the launches of the betting shop services Turf TV and The Racing Partnership.

High street bookmaking remains hugely important despite the closure of more than 1,100 betting shops since the new £2 stake was introduced for FOBTs.
