ITV needs to back its National coverage with more cross-promotion

It has been a while since I last watched Coronation Street, probably not since the halcyon days of Alec Gilroy and Reg Holdsworth when the soap used to pull in 20 million viewers.

Corrie's figures are more modest now, just below 9m – a similar number to the peak audience Saturday's Grand National attracted on ITV.

Those 8.5m viewers represented an increase of 300,000 on the previous year's figure but have still disappointed some observers, being much less than the 10m who watched Channel 4's last National in 2016.
