Irish Champions Weekend is suffering from dead cat bounce - it needs addressing

By now it hardly needs repeating that Irish Champions Weekend has been a roaring success in terms of the on-track participation metric.

This year’s iteration provided further resounding proof of that. A prize fund of nearly €4 million helped to ensure the two-day gala was graced with high-class horses and deeply competitive racing.

Apart from the superlative performances from the likes of Tahiyra, Highfield Princess and Kyprios, the 16 races threw up 12 winning trainers encompassing a decent range of the spectrum, including four from Britain. The broader international element ebbs and flows, but having Vadeni and Onesto at Leopardstown this time for the Irish Champion Stakes lent some proper clout to the marquee Group 1.
