I'm sorry, Aidan, but St Mark's Basilica wasn't the best you've ever trained
Aidan O'Brien hailed St Mark's Basilica as "possibly the best we've ever had at Ballydoyle" after the three-year-old was retired on Monday. I'm sorry, Aidan, but I can't agree.
The colt won the Dewhurst as a juvenile and enjoyed an unblemished three-year-old season, winning four more Group 1 races and establishing himself as the best ten-furlong horse of his generation, so there is no question he was a seriously talented animal. And to use one of racing's hardest-working cliches, he could beat only what was put in front of him.
But put St Mark's Basilica under the microscope and you'll find yourself wanting more, regardless of which barometer you choose to measure him by.
