In another engrossing Ireland’s Eye column on Wednesday, Alan Sweetman once again conveyed a lucid grasp of the seriousness of the debacle surrounding the reappointment of Brian Kavanagh as chief executive of Horse Racing Ireland.

It is a story that won’t be going away any time soon.

Needless to say, some are eager to shoot the messengers, but that only reinforces the sense too few people in positions of influence in Irish racing fully appreciate the extent of their responsibilities in relation to the handling of state funding.
