This is a fantastic time of year, with major meetings taking place so frequently and this week I headed north to enjoy a day at York.

Fortunately, I missed the wet weather on Wednesday and was instead on the Knavesmire on Thursday when the sun was shining. I was full of praise for Newmarket last week in terms of their offering for racegoers using a wheelchair and I would echo those comments for York, where I found it equally straightforward to get around.

York has always been a wonderful racecourse to visit and everyone at the track did a fantastic job again this week. Having won the John Smiths Cup there as an apprentice, I've always loved the course and from a rider's perspective there are very few hard luck stories. They tend to come up the centre, so the best horse usually wins. From what I could see this week, the course looked in brilliant condition despite the heavy rain earlier in the week and there was plenty of high-class racing to enjoy.
