This time next week, we’ll be in the final throes of what promises to be another enthralling Cotswolds extravaganza.

Tuesday’s heavyweight joust between Buveur D’Air and Faugheen is one of many Grade 1s that has the makings of a fascinating encounter, for all that recent empirical evidence suggests the latest champion is hard to oppose from a betting perspective.

Mercifully, sport, not least at the highest level, has an abiding capacity for the unexpected. That’s essentially why the anticipation levels that define the countdown to the Cheltenham Festival are as consuming as they are.
