There was an important political figure among the many happy racegoers at Doncaster last Saturday.

New culture secretary Karen Bradley, who has ultimate responsibility for racing and gambling, attended St Leger day with her family at the invitation of Arena Racing Company.

As Bradley was there in a private capacity it was requested that lobbying was kept to a minimum, although it is understood she had informal chats with representatives of both racing and the betting industry, given sponsors Ladbrokes were also entertaining guests at the course.
