Girl power as fillies dominate in big races across the globe
Most horsemen will tell you that a hard, tough filly would be more than a match for any colt. There may be exceptions to the rule but when they come along they tend to leave an indelible imprint on the racing public.
For those who love top-drawer fillies, the four-day spell from Thursday was something of a seventh heaven. It was a global panorama, too, from multiple Grade 1 winner Beholder turning out on America's west coast to Winx's reappearance in Australia. The girls were spreading gold dust wherever you looked.
We marvelled here in Britain at Mecca's Angel, whose Nunthorpe defeat of Limato was nothing less than a rout. While those around her struggled with the blistering pace, she was still on the bit when she sauntered to the front two furlongs out. And that final furlong? Usain Bolt would have approved.
