Gambling's relationship with football set to come under focus again

Wimbledon has only just finished, the Ashes have not yet started and the King George has not been run, let alone Glorious Goodwood, but the start of the football season is not that far away.

With it will come a reignition of the debate about the sport's relationship with betting and the gambling industry, especially as the industry's self-imposed whistle-to-whistle ban on gambling advertising is set to begin next month.

The new advertising code, produced by the Industry Group for Responsible Gambling, applies to all sport with the exceptions of horse and greyhound racing, but the beginning of the football season will bring it into sharp focus.
