Gambling's perception problem made clear at vital time for industry - and racing

When it comes to gambling and official statistics, the old saying about them being used in the same way a drunk man uses a lamppost springs to mind.

They tend to be used to support a certain viewpoint rather than to illuminate and the avalanche of figures that are quoted in the debate about gambling can make it very hard to have a reasoned discussion.

It was not a great surprise that the results of the Gambling Commission's latest quarterly telephone survey which were published last week did not receive a huge amount of coverage given they did not reflect the prevailing mood in the debate.
