Forget the barbs about Dettori's lifestyle - Gosden's anger turns on performance

So much has been made of the grand reconciliation between John Gosden and Frankie Dettori that you might be lulled into concluding that all will be rosy in the garden when they emerge from their protracted marriage counselling session at Newmarket. Hmm.

It probably will be up to a point. Mighty Ulysses has a big chance on Thursday, Inspiral ought to win the Falmouth with a leg tied up and then the bandwagon will roll on to Ireland next week, where Emily Upjohn should be more suited to the Curragh in her quest to atone for that narrow Classic defeat at Epsom.

No looking back, right? Maybe, maybe not. The thing is, so much went on as their professional relationship descended into a circus over the past few weeks that you’d nearly forget what it was that started the ructions in the first place. That often happens in relationships.
