Until very recently, Fonner Park racecourse in Nebraska would not have been well known to racing fans in the United States, let alone further afield, but its recently-found popularity might provide a clue to the opportunity which British racing could seize if events went its way.

In the first week of April last year the action at Fonner Park produced betting turnover of $958,424, or around £772,500.

In the equivalent week this year that figure had risen to more than $7.8 million, an increase in excess of 700 per cent.
