Even by the furiously unpredictable barometer of jump racing, what happened over the course of 24 hours was scarcely credible.

The profound sense of disappointment at Coneygree’s defection from the 32Red King George on Sunday was quickly overtaken by Monday’s news that Thistlecrack would join the cast after all. At a stroke, the prospect of a one-dimensional Christmas feature was transformed into as potentially thrilling a spectacle as anyone could reasonably expect this side of the Cheltenham Festival.
