Much was rightly made last month of the fact that 12 different trainers enjoyed a lucrative slice of Longines Irish Champion Weekend spoils.

Of the dozen, nine were indigenous handlers, and such an egalitarian spread helps to illustrate the largely healthy state of the Flat industry in Ireland.

With Dundalk's winter programme providing a year-round schedule and the vibrant international market a viable trading outlet, ambitious young handlers can build an efficient and sustainable business model.
