Do you remember when Desert Orchid defied 12st in the 1990 Irish Grand National? Or Carvill's Hill's jaw-dropping Welsh Grand National romp a year later?

I don't. Having developed my love for racing in late 2010, even Denman's second Hennessy victory in 2009 was too early for me. I missed the years when the best horses commonly ran in handicaps and had instead grown to accept that conditions races, nearly always with small fields and often drab, were what they ran in.

But this jumps season has provided something different, and it has opened my eyes to just how magical jump racing can be.
