During a statesmanlike oration at Cape Town University in 1966 that would become known as the Day of Affirmation or Ripple of Hope speech, Bobby Kennedy paraphrased what he referred to as an old Chinese curse.

"May he live in interesting times," the Democratic senator recited to illustrate a point, adding: "Like it or not, we live in interesting times."

This week, 40 years after Kennedy spoke so eloquently of "equality of freedom" and "protection of minorities", a similar sentiment abounds the world over. Donald Trump will soon be the de facto leader of the free world, so these are certainly interesting times.
