From a purist’s perspective the barometer of modern excellence in the racehorse is not Frankel, it is Sea The Stars.

Sea The Stars achieved far more than Frankel in their respective three-year-old seasons. He landed the 2,000 Guineas over a mile, the Derby over an extra half-mile, followed by the Eclipse, International and Irish Champion Stakes. He then signed off by winning the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.

Frankel, for his part, won five races at both three and four, remaining unbeaten in the process, although he never demonstrated Sea The Stars’s aptitude over a wide range of distances. Yet there was one respect in which Frankel’s deeds far outweighed those of Sea The Stars. And it was infinitely more important than the musings of any purist.
