Elliott's move for Russell shows shortage of top riders with big-race experience

A month ago we were all lamenting the end of a golden era for jump jockeys with Davy Russell's retirement, and events over the past ten days or so have illustrated that reality quite starkly.

Roll the clock back just a few years and Gordon Elliott was able to call upon Russell, Paul Carberry, Barry Geraghty and Robbie Power, and he wasn't averse to utilising the services of Ruby Walsh when necessary.

That's some portfolio of riders to have at your disposal. Then Jack Kennedy came along to pick up the baton, only for the fates to intervene in the indiscriminate fashion they have done.
