Elliott versus Mullins: the gripping finish to the 2018 Randox Health Grand National provides an apt promo for the final act of the Irish jumps season due to be played out at Punchestown.

The big race apart, the twin Goliaths of Irish jump racing largely kept their powder dry at Aintree. All guns will blaze next week in a reprise of last season's dramatic seasonal finale.

It's also worth reflecting briefly that the duel will not be an overwhelming preoccupation. For one thing, the majority of exchange players and betting-shop regulars, particularly UK-based punters, will simply take each race as it comes – the perennial search for a winner the most pressing concern.
