Part of the Champions Day hoopla and high jinks was the presentation to Silvestre de Sousa marking his second victory in the jockeys' title race, which he won hard held by a distance.

Befitting of the occasion the entire weighing room, including the real workers – the valets – formed a guard of honour for De Sousa, who shook everyone's hand before going up to receive his pot.

Looking on, it was hard not to be struck by just how remarkable De Sousa's journey has been – not merely the road less travelled but the one never travelled before.
