It will be great to get the crowds back at the Cheltenham Festival after the enforced absence last year owing to Covid.

The roar before the Supreme Novices' Hurdle is firmly established in the festival running order, and the atmosphere throughout the week cannot be matched. But there is another returning group who contribute something unique to the four days – amateur riders.

Covid regulations prevented them from participating last year, meaning something intrinsic to the festival was missing. Amateurs have been a key ingredient at Cheltenham down the decades. Who can forget Sam Waley-Cohen landing the 2011 Gold Cup on Long Run? Or Derek O'Connor and Jamie Codd riding on a par with the professionals?
