Twelve months ago the news of Tracey Crouch resigning as sports minister would have had corks popping in the head offices of high street bookmakers across the land.

However, the dramatic developments in parliament last week which led to Crouch's departure – and the row that has followed – have only piled more pressure and intense scrutiny on the industry.

When last week's Budget revealed that the cut in FOBT stakes to £2 from £100 would be implemented in October next year, along with the extent of the tax hike on online gambling to pay for it, it did at least provide the gambling industry with some certainty.
