Criticism of betting industry over Safer Gambling Week is cynical and mistimed

If there is anything that illustrates the challenges facing the gambling industry, it is the hostility displayed in some quarters to Safer Gambling Week.

The event, now in its fifth year, is being staged this week with the support of the Racing Post among others including the BHA, Sky Sports Racing, Racing TV and the Gambling Commission.

Its purpose is to raise awareness of the issue of safer gambling among the industry's own staff, customers and the wider general public and comes shortly after the launch of the Betting and Gaming Council's new 'Take Time To Think' campaign, the successor to the unlamented 'When The Fun Stops, Stop' which had become something of a millstone around the industry's neck.
