Conservative election win does not mean racing and betting will escape scrutiny

It may not come as a surprise, but one of the biggest cheers of the night during the Racehorse Owners Association awards last Thursday came when co-host Nick Luck read out the result of the general election exit poll at 10pm.

Judged by the reception it received one could only think if the exit poll had gone Jeremy Corbyn's way the resulting scenes at the Royal Lancaster Hotel would have resembled the evacuation of Saigon.

Many in racing appeared to fear the economic consequences of a Labour election victory and what effect it might have on the sport. That rather suggests a prevailing attitude that the economy is in safe hands with a Boris Johnson-led government. The proof of that particular pudding will be in the eating.
