Forgive a slight hint of sadness in one corner of Ireland if a famous man of the 1960s is written out of the record books at Newbury on Saturday.

Cloth Cap, fresh from a wind operation and what Jonjo O'Neill called a "lovely" comeback at Cheltenham, bids to repeat last year's success in the Ladbrokes Trophy and emulate Arkle as the race's only back-to-back winner.

Matching a feat achieved by Himself will be of little concern to the legion of fans who know the greatest chaser ever foaled has plenty of other miraculous entries on an astonishing CV, not least defying 12st 7lb in this hugely competitive handicap – then known as the Hennessy – in 1964 and 1965.
