Here we go again, with another attempt to reinvent the wheel as far as the regulation and governance of horseracing in Britain is concerned.

In his letter (November 24), Peter Webbon is right in his comments about the fundamental principle of independence in respect of such matters. International good practice for the regulation and governance of a sporting authority underpins the vital need for independence in the work of such authorities.

The creation of the BHA in 2007 followed that principle with the board comprising an independent chairman and a majority of independent members with sufficient stakeholder representation from the racecourses and Horsemen’s Group to ensure their views were taken into account.
