Ireland editor Richard Forristal struck a poignant note in a Racing Post article last Friday as he reflected on the change of direction taken by three men – Eddie Hales, Adrian Maguire and Timmy Murphy – all of whom he knew well from his previous life as a jump jockey.

It was a piece of writing that provided genuine insight into the stature of the three men, and also placed their recent decisions sensitively and intelligently in an overall context.

Murphy's retirement from the saddle was well timed, although there is always a stab of regret when you learn that a sportsperson who has provided you with enjoyment has left the arena for the last time.
