When the Jockey Club was replaced we were told racing would have a more contemporary, more marketing-aware approach, but 25 years on it is having to consider another attempt simply to buy attention and new followers.

Jeremy Wray explained that his Champion­ship Horse Racing proposal is “very much focusing” on jockeys and trainers “as opposed to the horse”.

“The horses are the engines but we need to get to know the people better. For the sport and its prestige, we’ve got to build these people up,” he said.
