The global racing industry may be tentatively rising to its feet but any resumption of the sport in Britain must still be handled carefully against the devastating backdrop of the coronavirus pandemic.

While a number of major jurisdictions have managed to soldier on behind closed doors, most notably Australia, Japan and Hong Kong, the sport came to a grinding halt in Europe last month, with Britain and Ireland suspending racing in line with their lockdown measures, moves that were no doubt difficult but eminently sensible.

After a widespread shutdown of the sport there are early signs of revival on the continent and some much-needed cause for optimism. Germany is planning to restart racing on May 4 and last week a revised French programme was published with a start date of May 11, which could go ahead despite a ban on other sports until September.
