While the cat's away the mice will play and while Donald Trump has been in the United Kingdom this week on a state visit, those vying to be his Democratic opponent in the next presidential election have been busy trying to bankroll those efforts.

Among them is Joe Biden, vice president to Barack Obama and the bookies' favourite. Perhaps in more ways than one.

Last month Biden held a fundraiser in Las Vegas that was co-hosted by, among others, the chief executive of William Hill's American arm Joe Asher and Jim Murren, the chief executive of MGM Resorts, who are involved in a joint venture in the US with Ladbrokes Coral's parent company GVC Holdings.
