We all like to think we have a pretty realistic, fact-based image of the world in our heads, but time after time data shows that most of us hold some wildly incorrect ideas about the world around us.

The polling organisation Ipsos Mori publish an annual survey called the Perils of Perception, derived from interviews with citizens of 40 countries who are quizzed on "key global issues and features of the population in their country".

The latest, published a couple months ago, revealed widespread misconceptions in every country surveyed.
