BHA chief executive Nick Rust was a senior figure at Ladbrokes when they tried to take over Coral in 1998, so he should know all about what happens when the competition authorities get involved, as is the case in the current proposed merger between the two bookmakers.

It is unlikely either firm will be particularly happy with their former employee following his submission for the BHA to the Competition and Markets Authority that was published last week.

It may be a good thing neither has signed up as an authorised betting partner as it might have made things much trickier politically for Rust to outline the governing body's problems with the deal.
