It may be a new year but the same old bad news keeps coming for the gambling industry with critical front page stories and one of the sector's smaller firms going into administration.

The prospects of a further clampdown or even an outright ban on so-called VIP status for high-spending customers who are rewarded with hospitality, bonuses and offers appeared to have increased following a Guardian front page on the practice last week.

Information received from the Gambling Commission under a freedom of information request showed the extent to which a small proportion of some operators' customer base provided a very high percentage of deposits – although there was no detail on what percentage of revenues they provided.
