There's no end in sight for Dettori's summer of love as big races mount up

Another weekend, another scintillating big-race double for the irrepressible Frankie Dettori. It has been that way since he struck in the Oaks on Anapurna less than eight weeks ago, with 15 Pattern races won at a strike-rate of two every seven days.

It’s hard to remember a sequence quite like it. And it prompts the question: can some jockeys make horses run faster? Horses seem to be doing that for Dettori of late, although the question itself is a little misleading.

No horse can run faster that it was genetically empowered to at birth, just as no car can exceed a top speed governed by its component parts. Different drivers will get different responses from the same car. As with jockeys, it’s the driver who takes the car closest to its optimum performance who will travel the fastest.
