In the coverage of Tiger Woods's remarkable comeback victory at the Tour Championship last week, one image stood out above all others.

It wasn't Tiger nailing a putt, or pinging a sweet drive down the East Lake fairway, nor even the man himself raising his arms in emotional triumph after sealing a first title after five years of pain both personal and physical.

No, the image – or clip, rather – that stood out was of Tiger, flanked by security guards and police officers, walking to the 18th hole pursued by thousands of running, jumping, cheering fans, a swarm of humanity whipped into a state of near-delirium by the prospect of witnessing one of the greatest sporting comebacks of them all.
