Christmas is upon us, but Nicky Henderson did not deliver the present many wanted on Saturday when all but ruling Altior out of next week's King George VI Chase at Kempton.

Henderson said he was up at 5am shaving on Saturday before heading up his historic Seven Barrows gallops to watch the son of High Chaparral exercise in what was a make-or-break piece of work to determine if he would line up in the Ladbrokes-sponsored Boxing Day showdown for a rematch with his Ascot conqueror Cyrname.

Notoriously powerful and eyecatching at his best, Altior did not produce his customary razor-sharp display.
