It would be wrong to say the Flat season came alive on Saturday, for that happened on the Thursday of Royal Ascot. The hero that afternoon was Frankie Dettori. At Sandown his name was being sung enthusiastically yet he was the first to admit this was not about him. This was all about Enable.

We did not know at the time that Sea Of Class, the wonderfully talented rival Enable so narrowly denied at Longchamp last October, was fighting for her life following a colic operation on Wednesday.

The prospect of a rematch was something to savour, even more so after Enable returned to action so thrillingly with her authoritative success in the Coral-Eclipse. The hope now must be that Sea Of Class survives and gets the chance to produce sons and daughters who represent their mother with distinction.
