A cap is not a good fit - proposal to limit horses in a yard looks problematic

Ed Walker expressed his concern last week that British racing was heading towards having 'super stables' of more than 300 horses if more was not done to prevent smaller yards from exiting the sport.

The trainer, responding to the news Joe Tuite and Harry Dunlop were quitting, rightly pointed out that the further concentration of power in too few hands would be a disaster for racing.

But what can be done to combat this and ensure training remains viable for stables of all sizes? One suggestion, backed by Marcus Tregoning, would be to cap the number of horses in every yard.
