A big pot for female riders would help break through the glass ceiling

With reference to Scott Burton’s excellent special report on female jockeys (August 11) and whether they should be granted an allowance, I agree with Hayley Turner.

Female jockeys are making good and steady progress toward equality with their male counterparts, at least on a day-to-day basis. Where very little progress is being made is at the upper echelon of the sport, the Classics and Group races.

It might be an idea to give female jockeys an allowance in Group 3 and Listed races to encourage trainers to put them on a better class of horse, allowing them to forge a relationship with horses who might go on to race in Group 1s and 2s.
