One trainer, one jockey, one horse and one race to watch on Saturday
Trainer
Four of the eight races televised on ITV on Saturday feature Venetia Williams-trained horses heading the market or vying for favouritism.
Southwell scorer Gemirande arrives off the back of a career-best for the 2m4f handicap chase at Sandown (1.15), while Frero Banbou is a course-and-distance winner and should go well in the 1m7½f handicap chase (1.50).
Djelo could have plenty more to offer in the 2m handicap hurdle (3.35), and at Wincanton, Desque De L’Isle bids for a hat-trick in the 1m7½f handicap chase (2.05) on a busy day for the Herefordshire stable.
Jockey
Rachael Blackmore has been out of luck in three rides at Sandown but there would be no better way to break her duck than in Grade 1 company.
The top jockey heads to Britain to partner the Henry de Bromhead-trained Arctic Bresil in the Unibet Tolworth Novices’ Hurdle (2.25). The six-year-old, who cost £305,000 at the sales in 2021, was an easy winner on his rules debut at Cork last month and is one of three horses towards the head of the betting.
Yorkhill was the last Irish-trained winner of the Tolworth for Willie Mullins in 2016, with Jeremys Flame, the only subsequent runner from Ireland, finishing second in 2020.
Horse
The Noel Fehily Racing Club are eyeing a first Grade 1 with the Paul Nicholls-trained Tahmuras in the Tolworth.
Harry Cobden’s mount is vying for favouritism and is 2-2 over hurdles, most recently winning a Listed event at Haydock.
It is a big afternoon for connections as their star mare Love Envoi is odds on to land the Listed Mares’ Hurdle (12.40) earlier on the card. She is 8-1 to gain a second Cheltenham Festival win in the Mares’ Hurdle.
Race
A veterans’ chase is a crowd pleaser and the £100,000 final of the 2022 series (3.00) should be a cracker at Sandown.
Last year’s winner Prime Venture returns off the same mark and the greys Ramses De Teillee and Snow Leopardess are among the classiest horses in the 3m event.
Saint Xavier, a recent winner at Haydock, is the mount of the in-form Lilly Pinchin, while Elegant Escape and Ballyandy are other popular old-timers in the 18-runner line-up.
