Oaks favourite Santa Barbara on the drift after support for stablemates
It's full steam ahead to next month's Epsom Classics, the Cazoo Derby and Cazoo Oaks. Market movers come thick and fast as the key Classic trials are run in Britain and Ireland, but big-race contenders can come from anywhere and it's easy to miss a potential dark horse. Classic Clues, our series running every morning, has you covered. Here's a recap of Thursday's news and how it's impacted on the Classic betting.
Market movers: Oaks punters hot on Snowfall
Two Ballydoyle fillies at the head of the Cazoo Oaks betting moved in opposite directions on Thursday, with ante-post favourite Santa Barbara eased in the face of support for Snowfall.
Coral cut the Aidan O'Brien-trained Snowfall, the impressive winner of the Musidora at York this month, into 4-1 (from 5), while 1,000 Guineas fourth Santa Barbara was pushed out to 7-4 (from 6-4).
Firm spokesman David Stevens said: "The first and second favourites for both the Cazoo Derby and Oaks are housed at Ballydoyle, and while there is an expectation Ryan Moore will be on board Santa Barbara and Bolshoi Ballet at Epsom, Snowfall and High Definition have shortened for their respective Classics in recent days, suggesting the jockey bookings may not be that straightforward."
A third O'Brien Oaks contender was a notable mover on Thursday after the recent support for Divinely continued, with her price shortened to a general 12-1.
Ladbrokes spokesman Jon Lees said: "Divinely was a 40-1 chance three days ago, but those odds halved just after lunch today and she's now 12-1 for the Oaks after significant support.
"The sister of Arc and Breeders' Cup winner Found has not reached the level of her famous sibling yet and was only fourth in the Lingfield Oaks Trial, but the betting suggests that may be about to change."
Friday is likely to be a quiet day for Classic clues on the track, although the fillies' and mares' maiden (5.05) at Fairyhouse features Juddmonte Irish Oaks entries Ulster Blackwater and Rosscarbery, while Sea Karats holds the same entry and appears in the 1m3½f maiden (3.05) at Yarmouth.
Classic update: Varian going all out for Epsom success
Roger Varian is readying a strong assault on the Cazoo Oaks with three fillies who have all been placed in recognised Classic trials.
The trainer said: "I was delighted with how Zeyaadah ran when second in the Cheshire Oaks and Jim Crowley got a mighty feel off her that day and was buzzing when he came in.
"Teona is a big, strong, energetic filly who had a lot of fizz on the day at York. She over-raced a bit in the straight but I thought there were a lot of positives to take from the race.
"I thought Save A Forest was going to win at Lingfield and we don't know her ceiling just yet as she shows us nothing at home."
Varian is also optimistic about his chances of Cazoo Derby success with Lingfield trial winner Third Realm, who is best-priced 14-1 chance for Epsom.
He said: "Third Realm has an outstanding attitude for the Derby or any big race. He's not a flashy worker at home and he recovered very quickly after Lingfield.
"He has a professional way of racing and a great mind for the job. We’ve still to learn whether he has the engine to bring home the Derby but he’s the coolest dude in the yard all right."
