Nicola Currie sets her sights on raising the bar for women in 2019

Nicola Currie, who rode out her claim last year, has set her sights high for 2019, aiming to eclipse colleague Josephine Gordon's record women's score of 106 winners in a calendar year.

Currie, voted Stobart Lesters lady rider of the year after her 81 winners in 2018, said: "I one hundred per cent want to set the bar higher and ride 107 winners.

"I will be going all out for it with my agent Phil Shea and I've made a good start with eight winners this month and a second treble of my career - I've got to ride a four-timer now!"

Betway make Currie an 11-2 chance to break Gordon's record.

Currie, who would be only the third woman to ride 100 winners in a calendar year after Hayley Turner and Gordon, was champion all-weather apprentice last winter and is looking to get ahead of schedule this year.

"I know it will be harder during the height of the summer to get the ten winners a month I need. I know it was easier with my claim last year and I have to prove myself without it but I want to keep the ball rolling.

"It helps that I can do light weights and Jamie Osborne has talked me into doing a blog [entitled Currient Affairs] on his new website to help on the publicity front."

Currie will be hoping the link-up with Osborne, who provided her with her biggest win to date in Raising Sand in the Challenge Cup heritage handicap at Ascot last year, will boost her chances of achieving her aim.
