Nicola Currie awaiting test results as she eyes return after Yarmouth spill
Flat jockey Nicola Currie, who scooped a valuable handicap prize when winning Ascot's International Stakes on Raising Sand last month, is awaiting test results she hopes will not lead to a lengthy absence from the saddle.
Currie was hurt at Yarmouth last week when unseated from the Charlie Wallis-trained Arzaak in a 5f handicap.
She has not ridden since, but is keeping positive.
The rider, who in May broke into the top ten list of the winningmost female Flat riders in Britain, has been spending time at jockey rehabilitation centre Oaksey House in Lambourn.
"I'm still waiting for the MRI results and will then have a bigger picture," she said. "It was my lower back and we thought there could be a small fracture, but thankfully that's all fine. There might be possible nerve damage due to the slap of it, but we're still just waiting for the results back.
"I was meant to have had them for the last three days and was hoping it would be today. I'm not overly mobile at the minute and haven't been riding out. It's still causing a lot of pain and I'll have a clearer idea when I get the results of whether we can kick on or be rested."
Currie, whose biggest win came on Raising Sand in the Challenge Cup at Ascot last October, enjoyed a breakthrough campaign in 2018, riding 81 winners.
She had hoped to better colleague Josephine Gordon's 2017 record of 106 for a woman in a calendar year this season, and is hoping to add to her tally of 40 as soon as possible.
"I think it's looking good and hopefully I can kick on at Oaksey House," the 26-year-old added. "I'm there every day, just getting ready to go again."
