Wincanton’s general manager Huw Williams is taking steps to ensure that a clash between fixtures at the Somerset course and local point-to-points does not occur again.

Wincanton's 'family day' on Sunday, March 26 suffered a decline in attendance compared to other years when it fell on the same day as a point-to-point staged at Ston Easton, which is less than 20 miles away.

Williams, speaking on Sunday, said: “We need to sit down with the powers that be at Jockey Club Racecourses [owner of Wincanton] and the Point-to-Point Authority to try to make sure the clashes do not happen again as it's no good for any of the parties concerned to be racing on the same day.

“Our attendance was below what was expected on the afternoon in question and I suspect the clash didn't help the point-to-point crowd either. We'll endeavour to make sure it doesn't happen again.”

He added: “There's enough racing in the west country at this time of year, with Taunton, Exeter and Newton Abbot all staging meetings, and people have only a certain amount of money to spend. It’s essential we get these things right for the future.”
