Newton Abbot calls off Tuesday card due to waterlogging
Newton Abbot's first fixture of the year on Tuesday has been called off after heavy rain left the course waterlogged.
The track, which last staged a meeting in October, has been hit by 33mm of rain since last Tuesday and with insufficient time for improvement the fixture was scrapped following an inspection on Monday morning.
Clerk of the course Jason Loosemore said: "It's a terrible start to our season but the rain at the end of last week has rendered the course unraceable in parts and there are bits of false ground."
Emphasising the localised nature of the weather, Loosemore, who also acts as clerk of the course at Taunton, added: "We're always a little bit vulnerable at the start of the season and our geographical location to the moors can be a factor.
"It's dry as a chip 40 miles up the road at Taunton and we're even considering watering for Thursday's fixture."
Newton Abbot's next meeting is scheduled for April 15.
