MyCatChance 20 pounces late with Bay Bridge to grab £28,000 first prize
The dramatic events of Qipco British Champions Day had a momentous impact on the outcome of the Tote Ten to Follow. If only Baaeed and Inspiral had not fluffed their lines the longtime leader O sue sweet would have held on to the £28,279 first prize, but instead it is MyCatChance 20, who had last-day scorers Bay Bridge and Emily Upjohn, who takes top spot.
Bay Bridge landed 67.15 points in winning the Champion Stakes, which was a Ten To Follow bonus race and included 25 bonus points, plus 12.5 for the runner-up Adayar, who picked up 13.40 in total.
It may go down as the race Baaeed failed to win on his swansong but the Shadwell star still delivered plenty across the season for Ten To Follow players, topping the charts with 156.77 points for 86.3 per cent of stables as the most popular pick.
Emily Upjohn, who just missed out on Oaks glory and was disappointing in the King George, repaid the 58.1 per cent of stables who kept faith in her by finally getting a Group 1 to her name in the Fillies & Mares Stakes to add 32.25 points. She finishes with 45.50 for the season.
Those results were eclipsed by Bayside Boy in the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, another TTF bonus race. Heading into Saturday, the son of New Bay had claimed just 14.77 points all season, but scored when it mattered with Tote returns of £39.05 to earn 95.05 points. That moved him on to 109.82 points for the season and up to seventh in the leading horse list, although unfortunately only 0.2 per cent included him in their line-up. Modern Games gave the winner’s team a 13.40-point boost in second.
Also securing a top-ten finish was Kinross, who took the Champions Sprint. As a four-time Group winner, he goes down as one of the under-exploited horses in the competition, with just 0.5 per cent of stables shouting him home. A total of 112.54 points, including 30.75 from Champions Day, means he finishes sixth overall.
The gutsy Trueshan was another Ascot scorer, getting his head in front for a hat-trick in the Long Distance Cup. Alan King’s stable star was chosen by 26.9 per cent of Ten To Follow stables, who enjoyed 41.38 points from his campaign, including 23.08 from this Flat season finale.
