The racing career of Joseph O'Brien's 2017 Melbourne Cup hero Rekindling has been reignited in an unlikely U-turn, with the six-year-old now back in training with O'Brien having been retired last August.

The horse who provided the Owning Hill handler with one of the most extraordinary moments of his brief but glittering career had made only one racecourse appearance since his Flemington heroics, trailing the TAB Australian Cup field last March for trainer Liam Howley.

The youngest Melbourne Cup winner since 1941, who began his career with David Wachman, was initially understood to be set for a new career at stud in Europe.
