Sir Michael Stoute on Wednesday described Newmarket colleague Luca Cumani as "the ultimate professional" in reacting to the news he will retire in December.

Stoute and Sir Mark Prescott, who hailed Cumani's 'great style, elegance and sharp intellect', are the only two trainers to have operated in Newmarket for longer than Cumani, who on Monday announced he planned to quit in December after a stellar 43-year career to focus on running Fittocks Stud with wife Sara.

Reflecting on Cumani's achievements, Stoute said: "As a trainer I consider him the ultimate professional; he was meticulous in everything he tackled. I was impressed by the way he trained Barathea for the Breeders' Cup Mile and his handling of Falbrav."
