Soft-ground specialists: five horses who will revel in Cheltenham conditions

Saturday

Ramses De Teillee (1.50)
This tough grey comes into his own in testing conditions. Last season rarely produced really deep ground and the winning time suggested even the Welsh National was not genuinely testing, but Ramses De Teillee was still an honourable second. A cosy win on heavy ground at the Showcase meeting last month ensures this seven-year-old will be fighting fit to fend off his rivals under top weight.

Remastered (3.00/3.30)
Any horse able to handle heavy ground at Ffos Las and Chepstow will scoff at the conditions at Cheltenham but any supporters of Remastered will have to forgive or forget his run in the Silver Trophy on his return. The towering chestnut set off at a frantic pace and paid the price in the final half of the race. However, his two wins have come on heavy going and he is of interest stepped up in trip, provided he can settle.

Sunday

Dawson City (1.15)
There is no doubt the ground will suit this old-fashioned chaser. He is a dual winner of the Devon National over a gruelling 3m6f at Exeter and the Cheltenham ground can be no worse than for his 2017 success when the winning time was more than a minute slower than the Racing Post standard time. However, there has to be a concern that he has never been at his best on his first run of the season and this is his first cross country try although he enjoys going out hunting.

Politologue (2.35)
This Grade 1-winning chaser has top form on all types of ground but handles softer surfaces with aplomb, as he showed when winning the 2017 Haldon Gold Cup and beating Min over 2m4f in the 2018 Melling Chase at Aintree. Officially soft at the Cheltenham Festival in March when he gave Altior a fright in the Champion Chase, he also won what must have been one of the worst Listed hurdles on heavy ground in his youth.

Monsieur Lecoq (3.00)
This unexposed hurdler is another to have passed the test in truly sapping conditions at both Chepstow and Ffos Las, where his reappearance win by a short-head in the Welsh Champion Hurdle was added proof that this five-year-old is a tough customer. The downside to his chances in the fiercely competitive Unibet Greatwood Hurdle is it cost him a 7lb rise in the weights, but he will keep battling when many have cried enough on the ground.
